This is so simple it hardly even qualifies as an IKEA hack, but we do like the way it turned out, and it took about 10 minutes to whip up. A not-quite D20, DIY D20 lamp.
We’re just calling it a D20 lamp for general purposes, as this obviously has 30 sides/isn’t D20-accurate, but let’s just go with it. 🙂 Or just call it “gaming dice inspired”. Either way. We saw these cardboard lamps at IKEA for $5, and couldn’t resist picking up a few with the intention of using them for various DIY projects. You COULD just make your own cardboard geometric shape, if you feel so inclined. But otherwise, this is a pretty solid IKEA item, as far as that goes.
Remember when we made that DIY Portal Companion Cube lamp, by taking a pre-bought cube and sticking a lamp in it? This one is on the same level of so-easy-it-probably-doesn’t-deserve-its-own-blog-post-but-why-not.
You need: IKEA “Joxtorp” pendant lamp, lamp cord kit (they have them at IKEA, we got ours at Home Depot), a Sharpie in whatever color you’d like, and (optional) stencil kit. Alternative: number stickers.
Step one (after assembling lamp per weird IKEA instructions): Draw numbers on lamp. We didn’t worry about number placement since we’ve never used a D30 before, and assume no one will care if the numbers aren’t to regulation.
Step two: There isn’t one. You’re already done. Unless you want to count “hang lamp” as a step.
We didn’t trust our handwriting (though our handwritten TARDIS corkboard turned out okay. Kind of), so we picked up a number stencil kit from Michael’s and used that. You could instead grab a package of number stickers (they’re in the scrapbooking aisle) and just stick those on. Either way, a one-step easy project that’ll make fun gamer decor for your next game night!
What do you think?
If you want more D20 inspired projects, we have our giant metallic D20, DIY chocolate gaming dice, and D20/gaming dice gingerbread “houses”.
