We talk a lot about our love of videogames (Claptrap trash can, anyone?), but it’s no secret that we also waste spend far too much time playing board games/tabletop games as well. If you’re looking to waste time beat summer boredom, here are some of our must-haves board games for geeks!
We’ll start with the twists on classic games. Love RISK? (we do!) Here are a few ways it has been geeked up:
Doctor Who RISK. Control a Dalek army! Exterminate.
Mass Effect RISK. Yes.
StarCraft RISK. YES.
Snake? SNAAAAKE! Metal Gear Solid RISK
Love to end friendships via Monopoly?
Doctor Who Monopoly. I call the celery token.
There is a Lucille token. That is enough. Walking Dead Monopoly
Nintendo Monopoly. I’ll trade you my Ganondorf for your Samus.
Adventure Time Monopoly. This is a thing. And that is great.
Star Trek Monopoly. Someone get this for us please.
Lord of the Rings Monopoly. You moved my guy – I’m Bill the Pony, you’re Sting.
Clue?
Dungeons and Dragons CLUE (We listed this in our Ultimate Geek Gift Guide last year, and STILL play it regularly)
Love Harry Potter and have too much money? Stupid expensive (but cool!) Harry Potter CLUE
We play A LOT of trivia in our household. We are usually too lazy to actually take the game board out, and instead just go through the cards, but it still counts. Geek trivia and party games:
World of Warcraft Trivial Pursuit
Geek Out (this too was on our Geek Gift Guide last year, and is still a big hit for us)
Geek Battle. Trivia game for general geekdom.
Card games!
Munchkin Deluxe (we LOVE Munchkin, and all of it’s expansions)
Munchkin Zombies. Now with more zombies.
Magic the Gathering (duh)
Star Trek Uno. Yes, Uno.
Cards Against Humanity. Not specifically geeky, but always awesome.
Adventure and other games. All the real tabletop geeks raise your hands!
[both hands up]
Legend of Drizzt (we play this when our DM isn’t available)
Firefly The Game. Can never be cancelled.
Game of Thrones. Backstab everyone you know.
The end.
What do you think? Do you have any favorite board games for geeks that we missed?

August 3, 2014 at 8:22 amHave you ever played Space Alert? Its an amazing representation of what it would be like to be on the Enterprise or another similar ship. You and your friends work together as the crew of your ship and try to survive missions which are narrated. You’re timed to choose your actions for the round and then replay the narrated mission to see how your team would have done in said mission. Its really hard unless you have a group of people who can communicate fairly well, but it’s a blast!

August 8, 2014 at 8:57 pmOooh, we have not played Space Alert, but it sounds awesome! We always like games that we can play as a team (instead of against each other), so that seems right up our alley.

August 3, 2014 at 12:14 pmMass Effect Risk ?! Oh my. Also very tempting is that Adventure Time Monopoly. Have you tried the Adventure Time collectible card game? We picked up a starter pack with the BMO & Rainacorn decks, but I’d like to see if other decks are better balanced.

August 8, 2014 at 8:58 pmI didn’t know there was an Adventure Time card game! Off to check it out…

August 3, 2014 at 1:02 pmMy sister and I used to play the LOTR monopoly game ALL THE TIME when we were younger… I remember we would always each chocolate wafer cookies while playing… and to this day whenever I see wafer cookies I always tell her “remember we used to play monopoly!?” I also have the Harry Potter Scene It game… it’s so much fun!! My family doesn’t think so though because I ALWAYS win… hehe 😉

August 8, 2014 at 9:01 pmI must be to Star Trek what you are to Harry Potter – I can’t get ANYONE to play any kind of Star Trek trivia games with me. But then Cam will wipe the floor with me in any game regarding Lord of the Rings. Ahh, fandoms. 🙂 -k

August 3, 2014 at 3:51 pmWe LOVE board games around here too! Our current favorites: Firefly, Eldritch Horror, Lords of Waterdeep, Talisman, and Ascension. All so good! And I agree, it’s hard to go wrong with Cards Against Humanity.

August 8, 2014 at 9:03 pmWe just ordered Lords of Waterdeep! So excited to try it. Is Eldritch Horror much different than Arkham Horror?

August 4, 2014 at 5:08 amI kick butt at Lord of The Rings Trivia Pursuit! 😛 no-one will play it with me any more because I always win!
I recently purchased Geek Battle… but haven’t played it. I’m also loving the geek made Fandoms Against Humanity! You can submit your own cards. It’s awesome!

August 8, 2014 at 9:05 pmFandoms Against Humanity?? This changes everything… I had no idea. Thank you!

August 4, 2014 at 6:26 amBattlestar Galactica the board game is hands-down one of the best, most thought out, true to source games I’ve ever played. The only downside is that you will never trust your friends again! In comparison, I didn’t love the Firefly game; I think it’s overly complicated and doesn’t capture the spirit of the show (though the Pirates and & BH expansion does help a lot).
Our other favorite games are Killer Bunnies, Settlers of Catan, Fluxx (we have Martians and Zombies), and Ticket to Ride. Recently we were introduced to a game called Shadows Over Camelot and that’s next on our to-buy list.
Thanks for the round-up!

August 8, 2014 at 9:09 pmWe’ll have to try Red Dragon Inn! Looks really cool (and like a good way to get a quick D&D fix). More importantly… there are nerd bars??

December 29, 2014 at 11:02 pmSome my favorites were already listed in your list and in the comments but in addition I would add Dominion and its expansions, Quarriors, Pandemic, Guillotine, and Love Letter. I also particularly enjoy Killer Bunnies, Fluxx, Settlers of Catan, and Ticket to Ride which another person mentioned.
