We just finished a backyard project that introduced us to Quikrete for the first time. After looking around for other DIY’s to use up the rest of the bag, I think we found the clear winner, using a Death Star ice mold.Continue Reading…
The easiest, cheapest built-in bookcase (move over IKEA!).
When we needed ways to display/store A LOT of stuff in our new home, we assessed our previous storage pieces – two medium IKEA Expedit shelving units and 2 IKEA Kilby bookcases. They were mismatched and pretty beat-up, but between them they could hold hundreds of Transformers, Star Trek figures, LEGO minifigures, graphic novels, books, and random other bits of geekery.
Despite our old shelves being functional enough, we wanted something more streamlined. After painting our new living room walls a light grey, we began work on a “built-in” bookcase. We’ve never done anything like this before, but it was surprisingly easy, cheap, and quick. The entire thing was assembled, attached to the wall, and painted (white to match the crown moulding, with a couple of yellow accent areas) within a few hours. Continue Reading…

Hobbit Hole Trailer for Ultimate Geek Camping
We’re working on a post about the best nerd camping gear (coming soon Here it is! ournerdhome.com/geekcampinggear) as well as a DIY geeky sleeping bag. Apparently we have camping on the mind. If you’re looking for the ultimate in geek camping, however, check THIS out: DIY Hobbit Hole Trailer (via Imgur). I can’t wait to see what this builder makes next!
H&M now has an online home decor store… and it’s pretty good!
We are in no way affiliated with H&M, and this is NOT an advertising post!
Now that I got that out of the way… H&M has a home decor line! AND an online store! This is all new stuff, since apparently H&M is pretty behind the rest of the world in terms of an online US shopping site. To tell you the truth, I’m not a huge fan of their clothing stores – mainly because I find the sizes to be hilariously inconsistent and I hate trying things on – BUT quite a few items from the home line actually look really cool. There aren’t any specifically nerd or geek items, but there are ton of cool graphic items that can blend or contrast well with nerd decor. What do you think? You can check out the entire line at HM.com.

Custom-made AT-AT book case? Yes please!
Most of us don’t have room in our house for the awe-inspiring custom built AT-AT loft bed, but this impressive book case/storage unit (seen on Neatorama) should be more than enough to tide you over. The model listed on Etsy has sold (for over $500!), but hopefully seeing ingenuity of this sort to incorporate geek passion into semi-practical home design might inspire you.
Quick Before/After: Curbside Wooden Armchair
While we were walking our dogs recently, we saw a broken and filthy chair sitting next to a neighbor’s trashcan. We both slowed down and stared at it as we walked by, but neither of us said anything. I mean… it was pretty gross – covered in spiderwebs and dirt, broken seat, sun damage, probably some dog pee on the legs… The next day when we walked by again, we instinctively both beelined straight for the chair. Books + amazing design: The World’s Most Beautiful Libraries
Two things that we can’t get enough of are books and great architecture. We just ran across this list of 62 of the World’s Most Beautiful Libraries on Mental_Floss, and were completely blown away. Between the two of us we have only been to three of these libraries, but I’m definitely hoping to upgrade that number soon. Continue Reading…
19 Awesomely Nerdy Fabrics
We currently have a handful of reuholstery projects stacking up in the garage (posts on those coming soon!), and have been scouring the internet to find the best geek fabrics. We found so many that we like, we might end up using all of them to make the nerdiest quilt around.
Here are our 19 current favorites, in no particular order:
Can nerdy obsessions meet good design?
Can a large collection of action figures, dozens of LEGO sets, a handmade Tardis, stacks and stacks of comic books, a full size Bat’leth, and a giant wall mounted Andúril replica (just to name a few things) somehow NOT make your house look like a messy, cluttered toy store? That’s the dilemma we faced while moving out of our old apartment and into our first house together. As much as we love to proudly wave our nerd flag, we also wanted to finally start incorporating our love and admiration for good design and vintage home decor into our real lives. This meant ditching the sagging IKEA shelves (which didn’t even match) and pretty much every other piece of furniture from our apartment, and starting over from scratch. Our budget was/is tight, so ever since that decision was made our days have been spent scouring flea markets, Craigslist, and thrift stores to find, build, and renovate our way into our ideal first place. Yep, our nerd home (hey! That’s the name of this blog!).
In the posts that follow, we will be showcasing tips on how to blend your geek culture favorites into your home decor. We hope that you like our blog (just like our home, it’s our first!), and will stick with us on this adventure. Allons-y!
